HINTS AND TIPS FOR THE BEST KIDS’BIRTHDAY PARTY EVER
For many parents, their kid’s birthday party is the one day on the calendar that they dread. What if the kids get bored? What if the food is a disaster? What if a child needs their mum or dad and they aren’t there? What if it rains? Will the entertainment be fabulous or a flop? So many ifs and buts……….
Relax. Here’s a simple checklist that will help you tick all the boxes for the perfect party.
· Use the long-range weather forecast as a guide to whether or not you need to have a plan B in place.
· To make it easy for guests to find the kids party, put directions to the venue on the birthday invitations as well as your mobile phone details.
· To make it easy for guests to find the party, tie some balloons on the gatepost.
· If you are having a themed party, try and make it fairly general so that busy parents (and kids) don’t get anxious or resentful about finding the right outfit. By way of example, it’s easier to prepare for a princess or fairy party than it is for a Tinkerbell one, or a superhero party rather than specifically a Spiderman or a Batman one.
· Remember to charge your camcorder, camera and mobile phone and make sure you have spare batteries for any devices/toys etc.
· Get a list of the kids’ names who are attending the birthday party, plus their parents’ mobile phone numbers in case they need to be contacted urgently.
· When it comes to the birthday cake – don’t stress. The kids won’t care if it’s not perfectly iced and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Large slabs of sponge cake are available from most supermarkets …simply ice one of those. Say goodbye to kitchen stresses and hello to convenience. For an instant ice-cream cake, simple take the lid off an icecream block and decorate with small candies, marshmallows, choc chips, crushed choc bars etc. You can also use whipped cream with a bit of food colouring to pipe decorations, wording etc onto icecream – it freezes hard and is easy to work with.
· Food should be as simple as possible, easy to eat and as healthy as possible. Single mouthfuls are best – such as veggie sticks, pieces of fruit, mini muffins, triangles of fairy bread or mini sandwiches, cocktail sausages, small chicken kebabs and little squares of pizza. Limit choices to four or five items.
· Draw up a party schedule and plan more games and entertainment that you think you’ll need (around 10 – 20 minutes per activity). If you’re doing traditional party games such as pass the parcel, always include a lolly in each wrapping and make sure each child gets a turn to unwrap. Other fun activities are decorating cupcakes, drawing faces on paper plates and musical bumps.
· And when it comes to the end of the party, you don’t have to splurge on goodie bags. Why not skip the sugar and preservative-laden candies and hand out goodie bags of decorated cookies?. For something completely different, what about a bag of birdseed or some veggie seeds for kids to plant at home. Also, be mindful of things that will be very messy in the car on the way home (eg sherbet, melting chocolate etc). The party supplies shops will have a huge range of giveaways, treats and party ideas for goodie bags – either visit your local shop of go online. Always prepare more party packs than necessary in case siblings arrive at home-time.
· Demarcate an area for presents to be set aside or decorate a box in which guests can place their gifts. Keep a list of gifts and who they came from so that thank-you notes can be written.
