Why is Crate Training so Important for Your Dog?
Many people believe that dog crate training is wonderful and effective. But others view is as cruel and inhumane, disputing its use as a training tool. It cannot be denied that there have been instances where crate training was done improperly and caused harm, but when done correctly it is an excellent training tool that provides your dog with his own safe environment.
Crate training, when done correctly, is not only humane, but can even be enjoyable for your dog. Crates are not meant to be the place where you put your dog away, out of your hair, when you don’t want it to bother you. Crates are also not meant to be used hours on end, locking your puppy or dog away and only letting it out when you feel like giving it attention. The crate should absolutely be used for those times when you cannot watch you puppy, but care should be taken not to use it too much.
With correct use, you will find there are many benefits to crate training. It is an effective aid in house breaking as a dog will not soil in a small area it cannot leave. While you don’t want to overuse this, crating your dog to keep it out of harm’s way when you are unable to watch it can be very beneficial for both of you. It also directly benefits your dog by giving him his very own safe place to go to for comfort.
Dogs naturally like to live in dens. The den makes them feel safe, confident, secure and comfortable. Proper use of the crate creates that “den” for them and they will actually be happy to go to it when sent there. This becomes an important area for your dog anytime he or she feels uncomfortable. Many dogs will actually go to their crate completely on their own when they feel afraid or insecure.
Another benefit of crate training is that it will help establish boundaries for your dog. But for this to work, the crate should never become a punishment and should never be used in a negative way. Crating your dog when you are not home teaches them where they belong anytime you leave the house. Many dog owners who have successfully crate trained their dogs found that when they were leaving the house, the dog would go to the crate on his or her own and stay there, whether they were locked in or not.
The community of dog owners remains divided on whether or not crate training is a good thing; however, the facts show that when used correctly, crate training can be very effective and humane. Your guiding points should be: 1) purchase the best quality crate possible, 2) it should be neither too large nor too small, and 3) never overuse the crate inappropriately. However, proper use of the crate will give you a happy, well trained puppy or dog that the entire family will be happy to have around.
