Simple Quick Tips For Home Office Organization
Has the corner of your family or living room become your home office? Follow these tips to get your home office organized, no matter where it’s located.
Invest in Adequate Furniture
Primarily, an office needs a clear work area. There should be enough space for all your computer hardware and peripheral equipment, as well as reference materials, files, office supplies and paper When purchasing office furniture, your priority should be making sure it has ample space for work and storage.
Establish Activity Centers
For an efficient office, create different activity areas. Create a “work center” where you have a clear workspace and a place for your computer and frequently used office products. You should also have a “reference center,” where you can store binders, manuals, a dictionary and professional books and materials. Office and paper supplies can be stored in a “supply center.”
Properly Place Your Hardware and Peripherals
Your computer equipment should be positioned according to frequency of use. Printers that are used daily should be easily accessible. Most people only access the CPU for troubleshooting. If this is the case, then store it under or next to the desk. Likewise, if you seldom use your scanner, place it outside the work area. When you are setting up your hardware, keep access to drives, trays and cords as open as possible. Finally, be sure not to block any drawers or take up leg room with tangled cords.
Establish a Paper-Processing Area
There should be a place within your work center for those papers that need immediate action. Find a place that is both accessible and in sight to store any paperwork associated with clients or ongoing projects. Set up a permanent file system for any paperwork you may infrequently reference.
Contain Unruly Wires
Can’t figure out which cord is which? Try folding mailing labels back on themselves around each cord to label the wires. Don’t just label the cords to the electric supply. Keep things organized by labeling those that connect different components as well. A good way to cut down on cord clutter is to bundle like wires together. So consider keeping computer speaker wires and stereo speaker wires together.
Take Care of Your Media and Computer Equipment
Be sure to use a surge protector for any delicate electronic equipment. It’s important to be sure that your surge protector is a transient-voltage surge protector and is UL listed. Go with a more expensive model. High-end protectors are built with replaceable fuses and will last longer than less costly ones, which may not work after a large surge.
A used fabric softener sheet is the ideal lint- and static-free rag for cleaning your CDs and DVDs. Handle your CDs only by the rim. This will help cut down on fingerprints. What needs to be cleaned is the back of the CD where the information is stored. Take the dryer sheet and start at the center of the CD. Stroke out to the edge, rather than cleaning in a circular motion.
When creating an organized, efficient office space, it’s sometimes essential to stack your equipment. It’s important not to stack any equipment with venting on the top (such as amps or satellite receivers), as they can get too warm. If you need to stack this type of equipment, use chair-leg protectors or some other kind of small plastic cup.
Use a lint-free cloth, such as an old T-shirt to regularly clean your computer screen. Spray water directly on the cloth and wipe clean. Don’t spray the screen directly. Avoid any abrasive substances. Window cleaners should also be avoided. A lint-free cloth and water is the way to go for a clean screen. If if doubt, consult your monitor’s manual for proper cleaning instructions.
