Beating the Heat with Lace Wigs

The spring and summer seasons are great times to show off your perfect coif. Unfortunately, many women have trouble with handling their hair in the hot and humid weather. Wearing a lace wig in the heat may seem like a bad idea but if done right, you can stay cool and comfortable while looking great all year round.

Benefits

Before getting into advice, let’s begin with the reason why. Wearing a lace wig in the summer has an actual purpose outside of looking fabulous. Severe weather conditions such as heat, sunlight and air pollutants can cause hair damage.

The heat is so drying that by wearing a lace wig in the summer, you are actually protecting it. Avoiding heat styling, blow drying and consistent brushing on dry ends will help hair growth and health.

Cap Type

The type of cap for your lace wig is very important to remaining cool in warm weather. Lace caps such as French and Swiss lace are very good for ventilation. Swiss lace is the finest of lace so will breathe the most. While these two cap types are the most common, there are new options that have wonderful results.

Silk top lace wigs which are also known as injection silk based lace consists of one layer of lace and another layer of silk. Between the two layers are the knots of the hair strands to hide unbleached and unnatural looking knots. The silk material combined with the lace provides a lighter lace wig that has maximum breathability for the scalp.

Hair Type

Many women are torn between synthetic and human hair lace wigs. While human hair is more natural in appearance, it is more expensive. Women who worry more about affordability typically purchase synthetic hair but want the added styling options of human hair. As far as beating the heat is concerned, both have their pros and con’s.

Human hair lace wigs initially feel more lightweight and have a lot of ventilation. Unfortunately, since human hair can require styling at times the heat styling tools in summer months can damage the hair. Damaged human hair can cause shedding which is detrimental to your own natural hair. If shedding is not repaired on the human hair lace wig, it can expose your own hair to harsh sunlight and heat damage.

Synthetic hair is great since the styles remain longer than human hair. The issue with synthetic hair is that these lace wigs often have a lot more hair which can block air from getting to the scalp. In addition, lower quality synthetic hair can attract more heat from the plastic material.

Color Choice

Color choice is a simple way to beat the heat while wearing your lace wig. As we all learned in grade school, darker colors attract heat. Wearing black, off black, and very dark shades of brown as hair colors can retain a lot of heat causing an uncomfortable feeling.

The simple solution is to wear lighter colors during the warmer months. Do not fret; you do not have to go bleach blonde to stay cool. Lighter browns and honey blondes are great base colors and if you are not as daring, just have lighter shades as highlights to offset darker colors.

Maintenance

Obviously, a certain level of discomfort is associated with being hot. Some people complain about itching scalp or breakouts from sweat at the lace wig hairline. This may seem like a heat issue but it is really an issue of hair care.

Sweat and dirt build up very easily when hot. This buildup is what causes that itchy feeling on the scalp. In the summer time, regular washing and conditioning is extremely important. Make sure to clean the hairline of the lace wig very well so that dirt is cleared away to prevent breakouts and dirty lace.

By following these tips, you will not have to compromise during the summer months. Remain gorgeous while feeling cool all summer long in your lace wig.
