How can I build a submarine with plastic bottles?
I need to build a mini submarine that will float, sink, and float in that order, and I can’t use the carrot idea. I can’t touch it, or have any contact with it once I put it on the water. Lastly, if it uses mainly plastic bottles and baking powder, that would be great.
That’s an interesting project. Here is what I’m thinking. It will be easy to make a small hole in a bottle so it will float and then gradually it will fill with water and sink. now to make it rise again. Baking soda and vinigar will create gas to blow the water back out, but the trick is to have them mix at the right time after the sub has sunk. If you tape two bottles together side by side and the top one has the small hole. then in the bottom bottle, if you attached a tissue packet of baking soda to the side toward the other bottle, and put some vinigar in it without touching the soda packet. Here is how I see that working. when the upper bottle is empty, it is of course lighter than the vinegar soda one so it will float that way up. once the upper bottle fills with water, it will be heavier and sink, but also will be heavier that the partially full bottle of vinigar so now the vinigar bottle will be on top, so now it will be upside down and will mix the vinigar and soda, making gas. then we just need a connecting hole so the gas can get to the water bottle and push out the water. Now we just need to figure out how to keep the water out of the vinigar bottle. perhaps a check valve like a flap valve or a ball which would block the connecting hole until the thing turns over. I would love to hear how this turns out.
