Exterior House Paint Varieties
Paint is decorative, but that’s not all its for. Without paint, the underlying surface of your house’s exterior (wood or vinyl) would be exposed to rain and snow. This is the primary purpose behind paint and its what makes the number of products available so confusing.
If it were just all about color and appearance, anyone could pick paint easily. Since it is not, some knowledge of what the different types of exterior paint for your home is a must. If you want your paint to last, the most important thing after proper surface preparation is choosing the right paint for your needs.
There are 4 basic elements to exterior paints: pigments, solvents, additives and binders. The properties of each exterior paint type and finish is a blend of each of these. Pigments make up the color and the binder is what holds all of the pigments together, acting as a sort of glue to keep them on the surface. The additives and solvents make up the other properties of the paint. Things like protective qualities, paint hardness, mildew resistance, etc. The solvent keeps the paint wet and is what decides how long it takes it to dry. This can also affect how well the paint adheres and how long it lasts as well.
The two major types of house paint for exterior are latex and alkyd (water and oil-based). In general, latex paints are used by the do-it-yourself painter and are more environmentally friendly while alkyd paints are often used by professionals because they spread faster and thicker.
Most latex paints have a fast drying time and come in a huge variety of color pallets. They are not always as long-lasting, however, and usually require more labor to apply to avoid marks from brushes, overspray, or rollers.
Alkyd paints, on the other hand, use oil as their base and are generally thicker. This means they take longer to dry, but give a better coating and usually last longer as well. Quality exterior paints for common surfaces such as wood will often be alkyd-based.
Some circumstances call for more uncommon paint types. Elastomeric paints are becoming more common, getting their name from their rubber-like quality once applied. Once used mainly on semi-flexible structures to keep the paint from chipping, these are becoming popular exterior house paints as well, especially on stucco finishes. This thick paint bonds very well and bridges small gaps and works well on surfaces that can change shape with the seasons.
Urethane is another exterior finish that is becoming popular. Used mainly on flooring, such as walkways, porches, and so forth, this is meant only for wooden surfaces. This tough paint can really make a wood floor shine. Urethane should not be confused with epoxy.
Choosing the right paint for your home is important and can save you a lot of effort in the long run by both making the job easier and by extending the time between paintings.
