Why is Princess Michael of Kent not known by her own forename?
There’s a sexist European (more specifically,German/Austrian) tradition where the wife of a dignitary takes on his title: Frau Professor (for the wife of a university professor; Frau Inspector of Railway Engines, etc. It doesn’t work the other way, though: It’s not Herr Minister of Finance, etc. It would have been nice and confusing if Margaret Thatcher’s hubby had been known as Mr. Prime Minister.
In the pre-world War 2 US Army, a General’s wife, for instance, was known as Mrs. General Eisenhower or Mrs. General Patton, but only among other officers’ wives on base..
And in the 19th Century, wives of C of E Bishops were known as Mrs. Bishop Proudie, etc. (See the novelist Anthony Trollope)
Titles of royals are especially confusing. HRH The Duke of Windsor tried all his life to have Her Grace The Duchess of Windsor raised to an HRH, but consistently lost out to Churchill (and to King George’s consort, Queen Elizabeth), and to public opinion.
