Do I need a reservoir for my oblique pen holder?/ what ink do I need?
I am starting to learn Spencerian calligraphy, and I purchased a Speedball kit that included 1 oblique penholder, two types of pointed nibs, but no reservoir. I don’t need a reservoir, correct?
Also, I purchased Winsor and Newton Calligraphy Ink, but the black seems way too thin (the gold works great). Is it the ink or me? I was under the impression that metallic inks were not for the beginner, but I’m getting way better results with the metallic, perhaps I’m doing something wrong if I can’t get the black ink to work.
Do I seem to have the right supplies?
pointed nibs have an ‘eye’…a little hole…that helps to hold the ink. make sure you clean the nib with a soft cloth/gentle soap…maybe an old soft toothbrush to remove the coating on new nibs.
higgins eternal ink is inexpensive and works fine. i use the winsor/newton inks without problem—it could be the nib. speedball nibs are not my favorites. for information about nibs and spencerian, see spencerian.com. you need a sharp, flexible nib to make the heavy shades and the thin lowercase letters.
