How to cover a surface in foam?
I am trying to coat a spherical surface in an even layer of foam (2-3 mm thick). I do not want to use the craft foam sheets because they will crinkle up. I was thinking of some sort of paint on or spray on foam, but I am not sure if such a thing exists. This is for a craft purpose so I would need it in colors. Has anyone heard of something that can help me out? Thanks
I don’t think there is a ready-made foam as you describe it. What sculptors do is to take the object they want covered in foam, spray it with insulation foam from a hardware store or home store, allow it to dry and expand, turn it, spray again, repeat until the object is covered.
Next you use a serrated-edge electric knife dedicated to the project (can’t be used for food after that) to shave the excess foam down to the level you want it, then paint it. Be sure to protect the surface you place the object on for spraying. Painter’s tarps or wax paper do just fine.
Each time you use a can of foam, spray all of it out. Any foam left in the can will turn just as hard as the foam that was sprayed out. You can carve the excess foam into other sculptures. It may take a few cans of foam to finish your project, depending on the size of the project.
