how do i feather in new plaster too old following repairs?
just gonna tackle a repair in my plastering theres a hole approx 4 x 3 inches …. and approx 20mm in depth …. what i know to do is using a bolster chisel and hammer remove all loose plaster around it and square it off….. then i’m gonna clean it free from dust and give it a PVA coating. 3 parts water to 1 pva. when that drys i’m gonna use back conding coat to build it up just shy of 2mm from surface and then pva that and then add multi finish to fill the 2mm… problem is how do i then feather it so it looks ok with surrounding areas… do i just sand off the parts i’ve gone over???? can it be done so it looks perfect???? any help needed…. P.S please explain your answers using idiot terms as i am one…. thanks
Scrape the area well. Hammering, or chiseling, will likely result in a greater surface area for you to repair. You can use simple plaster to cover the imperfection. Apply your filler in at least 2 applications (thus assuring yourself that the base filler is fully intact (dried and bonded) prior to a finish coat. Extend your finish coat at least 3-4 inches beyond the repaired area.
The Only real trick, after completing the last coat, is to sand well with a fine grit sand paper to assure that you feather the edges in well. This will make your repair invisible. Make sure you prime the area at least twice prior to painting.
