Blue Peter Calls Upon British Child Designers
The Queen trusts her loyal subjects so much that she is giving the usually multi-million pound job of custom logo design to TV-watching kids, the BBC announced this Sunday 31st of October.
Armed with pens, pencils and crayons, viewers of children’s television show Blue Peter will turn logo designer for a day, with their winning designs featuring on items ranging from commemorative mugs to big red buses, marking 60 years on the throne. Logos for the silver and gold jubilees of 1977 and 2002 were designed by British professionals.
Blue Peter’s monday edition broke news of the competition to excited children. Rules dictate that whilst the Queen herself must not be depicted, her crown must be. Entries are divided into three age groupings: six to eight, nine to eleven and twelve to fourteen-year-olds. Joining the Blue Peter staff in judging the entries will be a panel of children’s illustrators, as well as British designer Marin Lambie-Nairn who will oversee the panel.. Winners will be announced in February 2011. Runners up will join the overall winners at Buckingham Palace for a special party.
In Feburary 2012, Queen Elizabeth II will be the second British monarch to reign for sixth years.. The only previous monarch to reach their Diamond Jubilee was Elizabeth’s Great Great Grandmother, Queen Victoria, who reigned for 63 years in total.
Blue Peter itself has been a significant and constant fixture in the lives of British children during the monarch’s reign, reaching a fifty second year on the air this October. Blue Peter recently found itself in trouble for allegations of telephone-vote fixing: an industry wide problem that resulted in a severe shake-up of the British television industry. Blue Peter will be hoping that their selected logo designs will cause them significantly less grief than their cat, ‘socks’ caused them.
With the Olympics also following within the Jubilee year, 2012 is promising to be very exciting indeed for the British. Inevitable comparisons between the winning Blue Peter design and the widely-disliked London 2012 logo will be made savagely in the country’s media..
