Colored Pencils

Colored Pencils
What is a good web site regarding drawing with colored pencils?

I would like to hear form any artist who knows how to shade with colored pencils. Do you shade with a graphite pencil or use a darker hue of the same color?

Thanks!

I work with Prismacolor colored pencils. For me, it’s easier to shade from the lightest to darkest color using colors of the same family. Just because black is dark, doesn’t mean that it has to be or should be used to shade — black tends to make the shading look flat and lifeless. I only use it as an absolute.

Also, I never mix graphite with my colored pencil illustrations, because it comes out looking metallic — even if you use an Ebony pencil. I do, however, use gauche and ink to highlight. I’ve even used acrylic as a means of creating texture in my illustrations — illustrating a dragon and using acrylic for the stomach and scales of the dragon. Only problem doing that is that EVERYONE wants to touch it…

If you would like to see some examples from artists that use Prismacolor Colored Pencils, you can visit the gallery area of the Prismacolor site:

Hope this has helped!
