What To Look For In A G.I. Joe Action Figure?
In 1959 the Barbie doll became available to American girls as well as their adoring parents, and the description “fashion doll” was generated. Fashion dolls joined up with the ever-growing subcategories of dolls from rag dolls to china dolls which had one unifying feature – they were intended for girls. Another great alternative is the Gamo Air Rifles.
In 1964, Hasbro unveiled a brand of military-clothed figures supposed to be a boy-friendly version of the Barbie doll. The figures were never described as dolls, even in the initial promotion, merely due to the fact that they were so obviously designed for boys. The term “action figure” was created, and from then on a human-looking figure which was obviously designed for fighting was advertized as being an action figure.
The original G.I. Joe action figures were more specifically four unique figures dressed as members of the four branches of the department of defense. The term G.I. means Government Issue, which became a universal term for U.S. Soldiers in the course of the Second World War.
Every G.I. Joe was sold with a uniform and hat for the applicable branch of service. All the figures additionally had a full line of tools and weapons required in their branch of service; as an illustration, the soldier would feature an optional rifle and field pack which were sold either separately or one piece of a bigger set. Each G.I. Joe figure had a World War II theme, even though their outfits and equipment were appropriate for the more recent Korean War. Another great product to consider is the Gamo Air Rifles.
The initial action figures were exactly as tall as the Barbie dolls of the time; 11 1/2 inches. In the1970s, the military men had recieved a new hand style which could grasp their own accessories for instance rifles and combat knives. The action figures had furthermore shrunk to 8″ tall to be better aligned with the rest of the action figure market which was then dominated by the Marvel Comics superhero toys. In yet another nod to their fresh opposition, the military men were now rebranded “Super G.I. Joe”. During the 80s, Joe shrank a bit further, to 3 3/4 inches, and then shot up to 12 inches once more in 1991.
The effect of all this growing, shrinking, re-branding and the spontaneous revival of previous product lines is that you may currently get a G.I. Joe action figure in just about any size Hasbro has ever produced. The standard G.I. Joe is today a 6” figure and a good number of characters are priced at below $10, although some 12” collector G.I. Joes are out there, and there is actually a 16” Duke figure that comes with an accelerator suit that costs $30.
Needless to say, the number of weapons and vehicles has multiplied several times, since the figures now have nearly 50 years of guns, cannons and bombs to draw from along with any 22nd century gizmos that the developers at Hasbro may imagine. Many small boys – and a few fully grown ones, also – love fighting and winning wars with their G.I. Joe action figures. Just don’t call them dolls. Another nice option is the Gamo Air Rifles.
